How to Know Your Wow. New Eyes Lesson # 5
“To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability.”~ Matthew 25:15
Life’s become a spectator sport. We’ve become wired for wow. We spend hours glued to the screen watching other people do all sorts of amazing stuff. For instance, my mom absolutely loves Dancing With the Stars. And, I have a good friend who’d never miss an episode of American Idol. Sometimes I overhear people talking about contestants on the show as if they know them personally!
We’ve developed an insatiable appetite for watching talent and measuring talent and comparing ourselves, mostly unfavorably, with what parades across our phone, our tablet or our 64 inch screen. What’s wrong with that you wonder?
Well, what’s YOUR wow?
It’s easy to feel small and begin sinking, sliding lower and lower into the couch cushions when we compare ourselves to what we see. All that talent, those incredible gifts! You begin to wonder if you have anything going for you. The answer is of course you do! And be very careful! There’s nothing that can steal our joy faster than the comparison game!
Every one of us has a gift (and often more than one!), something that no one else has in a way that’s just like ours. We may wish our gift was different than what we’ve been given, that’s pretty universal. But that’s a complete waste of time! Our job is find our own unique WOW and run with it!
But where oh where is my WOW?
Are wondering how to find your special gifts or talents? Research has turned up a few ways that might help. Here are some ideas for you, from an article in The Huffington Post.
Go back to your childhood. Think back when you weren’t influenced by peers, fears or your parents’ expectations. What created the best memories, what was the most fun? You might find something that will point the way and begin to reveal your unique gift.
Get Lost In The Present. When did you lose track of time? When are you so lost in activity that you don’t think about the clock, or eating, or sleeping? Those hours of complete absorption point towards areas of strong interest and deep passion. Follow that trail!
Ask! Friends, family and trusted advisors see you in ways that you can’t see yourself. What they see can be valuable and revealing. Often their observations offer greater clarity than self-analysis. Ask them about your strengths, skills, and unique talents. “What makes me unique? Is there something I do particularly well? Tell me what you think are my strongest skills or characteristics.”
Now waltz with your wow!
Once you begin to see a pattern in the things you do well, things that come easily to you, start noticing! Then start thinking of how you can develop it even more and make it a part of what you do, not only in your free time but look for ways you can begin to incorporate some aspects into your daily work!
In our journey through this life, it’s really important to celebrate our uniquenesses and spend some time investing in those things that bring us joy. When we do, life becomes much more meaningful and fulfilling and helps us over the inevitable bumps that come along.
See you again Monday! I promise you have incredible gifts just waiting to be discovered! I’m waiting for your wow!
